Our case to Council

The residents of Rosebank Street, Glebe write to request urgent attention to the renewal of Rosebank Street and St James Lane as part of the City of Sydney's ongoing streetscape and urban greening programs.

Our street has seen significant demographic change in recent years, with notably more young families and elderly residents โ€” both groups who depend on safe, accessible public infrastructure. Yet the footpaths, road surface, and greening of Rosebank Street have not kept pace with the investment seen in neighbouring corridors.

We are not making an extraordinary request. We are asking for the same standard of attention that Bridge Road and John Street have recently received โ€” and we believe the momentum of those works makes now the right time to extend that investment to our street.

Six issues requiring
Council action

1

Cracked and broken footpaths โ€” trip hazards

Footpaths throughout Rosebank Street and St James Lane are cracked, uneven, and in some sections completely broken. These represent genuine trip hazards and are documented photographically.

2

Unattended yellow utility cover

A large yellow utility cover has remained in place on Rosebank Street, unattended and unresolved, for multiple years. We request an update on its status and a timeline for removal or permanent resolution.

3

Footpaths too narrow for mobility aids

In several sections of Rosebank Street, footpaths narrow to a width insufficient for wheelchairs or walking frames, forcing mobility-impaired residents into the road. This is an access equity issue of priority concern.

4

Road surface and kerb disrepair โ€” St James Lane

The road surface and kerbing along the full length of St James Lane is in significant disrepair. Multiple sections require resurfacing and kerb reconstruction.

5

Sinkhole in St James Lane

A recently patched sinkhole in the middle of St James Lane has been given only a temporary fix. We request investigation of the underlying infrastructure and permanent remediation.

6

Illegal parking โ€” Rosebank St / Bridge Rd intersection

Chronic illegal parking in clearly marked no-stopping zones at the Rosebank Street and Bridge Road intersection creates visibility hazards and pedestrian safety risks. We request enforcement and physical design measures.

What we're
asking Council to do

๐Ÿงฑ Heritage paving

Cobblestone-effect paving consistent with nearby John Street โ€” durable, characterful, and in keeping with Glebe's heritage streetscape.

๐ŸŒณ Expanded tree canopy

Additional street trees aligned with the proposed St James Court canopy works, addressing heat island effects and Council's own urban greening strategy.

โ™ฟ Accessible footpaths

Full-width, flush-kerbed footpaths along Rosebank Street and St James Lane that meet accessibility standards for all residents.

๐Ÿ”ง Infrastructure resolution

Permanent resolution of the utility cover, sinkhole, and road surface issues in St James Lane โ€” not temporary patches.

Council has done
this before

Recent
Jean Cawley Reserve improvements
Council invested in Jean Cawley Reserve, immediately adjacent to Rosebank Street. We greatly appreciate this work and request the same attention be extended to the surrounding streets.
Recent
Bridge Road resurfacing & bicycle lane
The Bridge Road corridor was resurfaced and upgraded with a new bicycle lane. This investment demonstrates the standard achievable on nearby streets โ€” and the momentum it creates.
Established
John Street cobblestone paving
Heritage-sensitive cobblestone-effect paving near the tennis courts has proven durable and popular. Residents strongly support a similar approach for Rosebank Street.
Proposed
St James Court tree canopy works
Proposed canopy enhancement and gutter restructuring at St James Court โ€” which Antigone Foster has already corresponded with Council about โ€” presents the perfect opportunity to integrate Rosebank Street works.
